If toxins and wastes begin to build up in the tissues because the kidneys and the liver cannot cope with their job, then sooner or later disease will follow. Such is the responsibility to keep a healthy and well functioning skin.

We do need to wash, perhaps even more than we realised. But does that ritual with the soap and water actually do the job? Of course it’s still fun to jump into the tub, but once you start to skin brush, you won’t need to use all that harmful soap. Skin brushing itself, will make a lot of difference to the quality of your skin.
The skin-brushing itself – dry of course, not in the bath – will change the health of your whole body. Circulation, skin softness and quality, skin infections and irritations, whole body freshness, your level of stimulation, the prevention of colds, and you personal rejuvenation are all areas of improvement you can look for, when you make it to a regular habit.

To brush the skin: Start at the soles of the feet and work your way up your legs, your front and your back, brushing as vigorously as you feel able. Then do your hands and up your arms. Focus the brush strokes, when doing your chest and upper back, towards your heart. Don’t do your face, but give the back of your neck and your scalp a good go. For hygiene reasons you need a separate brush for each member of the family, and of course, you need to wash the brush itself every couple of weeks.

Skin Brushing

This is another natural lymphatic cleansing and detoxification method which helps clean the lymph system. The lymph system contains a number of minute vessels that have one-way valves (upwards) which help release the waste products from various tissues. These waste products are then released from the lymphatic system into the bloodstream.

Skin brushing will help move the various waste products efficiently and speedily upwards along the lymphatic system and into the blood stream, thereby cleansing the lymphatic system quickly. All you require is a regular soft bristle brush with a longish handle which will help you reach various parts of your body without straining yourself too much. It is best to do skin brushing after you’ve had your bath with longish strokes, moving upwards towards your heart region.

Body / Lymphatic Massages

Another method of lymphatic cleansing and detox is via lymphatic massages. Massages help stimulate the lymph nodes and lymphatic system by facilitating the lymphatic system to flush out all the waste products accumulated as a result of cell metabolism along with excess fluid and microorganisms. During manual massages, the lymphatic system is stimulated and will help facilitate the free and smooth flow of lymphatic fluid or lymph, thereby contributing to a strong immune system.

Clay Bath

One can undergo lymphatic cleansing by taking a clay bath for a duration of 15-30 minutes to 2 hours, depending upon one’s comfort level. These clay baths help release toxins from the skin and thereby free the lymphatic system of certain heavy toxins that have accumulated at the lymph.

This is fairly simple and one can use a living clay variety available in powder form. Ideally, two or three cups of dry clay powder can be mixed in the hot bath water, clearing all clumps with hands, and one can submerge oneself in the clay bath for about 15 to 30 minutes. If a lot of toxins are released, the clay water can turn dark. After the bath, clear the bath water by using lots of clear water.

The human lymphatic system plays a key role in maintaining and obtaining good health. Thus, regular lymphatic cleansing and detox can go a long away towards improving one’s level of health, immunity and vitality.

The first step in cleansing the lymphatic system is to cleanse the colon so that the excess mucoid material backed up in the lymphatic system can be drained up.

The second step in cleansing the lymphatic system is to practice skin brushing. This is a highly effective technique for stimulating the expulsion of fresh mucoid material, hardened particulate or impacted mucoid matter, and other obstructions of the lymphatic system and for correcting inflammations of the lymph nodes. Like the colon, the lymphatic system can contain stagnant accumulations of old waste matter.

If the skin becomes inactive with its pores chocked with millions of dead cells, then impurities will remain in the body. The other eliminative organs, mainly the kidneys and liver, will have to increase their labour and will eventually become overworked.

“Lymphatic cleansing is essential for good health, because the human lymphatic system plays a key role in the wellbeing of the body. It forms a core part of the body’s immune system, and is also responsible for bringing nutrients to as well as wastes away from cells.

Diet and Nutrition

Food that we consume can sometimes help in the smooth flow and functioning of the lymph or hamper the flow of lymph in the human body. In order to cleanse the lymph system, one should avoid food that contain chemicals, artificial flavoring agents, artificial colors, preservatives, and stabilizing agents; these are found in processed food to increase shelf life. The more one consumes food that is not fresh, the more one will congest or block the lymphatic fluid from flowing freely in the human lymphatic system.

It is also advisable to stay away from food that is not easy to digest, and this includes food containing too much fat, animal protein, sugars and carbohydrates. Food that is sweet to taste and is white, food produced using white flour, such as white bread, white pasta, and white rice consume a lot of energy to digest, energy which could have helped clean up the lymphatic system. These food items also wreak havoc with one’s blood sugar levels.

As you can see, lymphatic cleansing is not just about what we can do, but also about what we should not do, or, in this case, what we should not eat.

In addition to the above, one must try and drink up to 2 liters of water everyday. If possible, one could drink warm water, for this can help dissolve certain stubborn waste products accumulated across various body parts. Indeed, drinking a lot of water is probably the most basic form of bodily and lymphatic detox.

Besides one’s diet and nutrition, there are several other lymphatic cleansing and detoxification methods.

Exercise

This is the best form of detoxification as far as the lymphatic system is concerned. The lymphatic system is responsible for fighting infections and it is important to keep the lymphatic system healthy at all times. Exercise helps keep the movement of lymphatic fluid at its maximum and ensures a lot of toxins are flushed out by sweating. Exercise also improves blood circulation, strengthens the heart and oxygenates cells. Exercise is indeed the best and most natural form of lymphatic cleansing.

Herbs

Astragalus, echinacea, goldenseal, pokeroot, wild indigo root, burdock, and red clover are excellent herbs that will help cleanse the lymphatic system and flush out toxins accumulated in the lymph. All herbal products should be taken in conjunction with an organic food diet or food which is free of any and all chemical products and substances. Another important point to note is to continue to exercise while using such lymphatic detox herbs, in order to reap the maximum benefits.

There are a number of easy and effective ways to promote lymphatic flow including dry body brushing, massage, vigorous exercise, hydration and muscular activity (weights, yoga, tai chi or Pilates).
Dry body brushing in particular is a great way to stimulate lymphatic and circulatory flow as it stimulates the dense network of nerves that run just under the skin layer, which in-turn increase blood circulation and the function of the lymphatic system.

Another method suggested by Bodecare is alternate cold and hot showers. See method below:
Did you know that a prolonged hot shower without alternation with cool water (the type of shower most people take) is fatiguing and causes circulatory congestion? When performed Alternate Hot & Cold showers properly, this technique stimulates the nerves, endocrine glands, circulatory system and skin.

For best results of an Alternate Hot/Cold Shower you can use the following steps as a guide:
Firstly conduct a Dry Body Brushing routine: begin warm to hot shower for 2-3 minutes (water should be at a comfortable temperature). Follow with a cold shower for 15 seconds. Once again water should be at a comfortable temperature. Each 15 seconds repeat with hot and cold shower. To finish towel dry.

Given that we do not understand these fine points well enough to be certain, it would seem appropriate that patients who have not yet had surgery try to move as much lymph through the body as possible to see if the swelling subsides. For those who feel they are at risk for cancer, periodic lymphatic stimulation and/or drainage may be a healthy preventative measure. Once, however, the nodes are gone, it is more uphill. One very simple but probably only minimally helpful exercise is to hold the affected (swollen) area upwards to see if gravity will permit some of the lymph to descend into areas that still have adequate drainage.

What very few patients seem to realize is that the immune system does not fight cancer so long as there is infection in the body. Isn’t this one of Nature’s ironies? People are more afraid of cancer than infection, but the body tries to eliminate infection before turning its resources towards cancer control. The lymphatic system in many people is overwhelmed by infection, often stemming from dental problems, as well as toxic substances (mercury, aluminum, chemicals from antiperspirants, dry cleaning, and so forth.) Lending a hand to the lymphatic system will usually relieve some of the pressure on other parts of the body.

The lymphatic system is a key pathway of detoxification and stimulating this pathway can help our bodies cope with the daily toxic burden of synthetic chemicals, pollutants and toxins we are exposed to.
In fact, the lymphatic system is a complex drainage network involving fluids, vessels and organs. Its primary role is to remove cellular waste, proteins, foreign bodies, excess fluid, toxins and other microorganisms and return them to the bloodstream. Via the lymph nodes, this system helps to filter out toxins purify our bodies of waste.

There are approximately 6-10 litres of lymph in the body at any one time, which is pumped around via muscular contraction and movement. Lymph flows in one direction only – upwards to the heart. When the body is under stress (infection, stress, lack of physical activity, dehydration, toxic overload) tissue swelling can result and protein accumulation in the lymph nodes occurs. The result is a build up of toxins, which can end up affecting the normal function of the cells. Long term this can lead to underactive metabolic function of cells.

A classic example of chronic lymphatic congestion is the formation of cellulite, which is related in part to lymphatic congestion and poor blood flow to the affected areas. You can confirm the poor blood-flow yourself by feeling any areas of your body that have cellulite – they feel cooler than other areas of your skin due to the lack of warm blood supply to the area.

The body tries to protect itself from free toxins floating around in the body – after all they can damage our primary organs. As a result toxins are stored in many different ways in the body – mucus in the respiratory system, deposits in fat cells, as cholesterol or around the joints. Stimulating the flow of toxins out of the body by promoting lymphatic flow can help reduce your body’s overall toxic load.

As many patients know, cancer diagnosis often includes an evaluation based on what is found in the lymph nodes. In general, allopathic medicine views the presence of cancer in the nodes as evidence of metastasis. This opinion is often attended by recommendations for more radical surgical procedures and usually a worse prognosis. As all patients who have had lymph nodes removed know, circulation is generally worse after the loss of nodes: swelling, serious edema, and the need for medical procedures to remove fluids are all part of the aftermath of these procedures.

I am not in a position to evaluate the merits of the surgical measures. I merely sympathize with the suffering of the patients. They often have reddish swelling, intense itching, rashes, and loss of motion.

There are specialists in manual lymphatic drainage, a very delicate massage technique taught in Austria (called the Vodder method) who are trained to help reroute lymph flow so as to by-pass the normal channels, the ones that have been removed.

Though people who are specialists in this method are reluctant to state opinions, many have theorized that when malignancy is found in the lymph that the lymph nodes are doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing. In other words, it is not 100% clear to them that the cancer has metastasized, merely that it has accumulated in the lymph.
